What is SEO?

There are tons of people who have websites on the Internet that no one knows about. They don’t get much traffic and are rarely viewed. This is the worst thing that could happen to someone who is using their website as a business set-up. That is why SEO is so important to creating that viable online presence.

SEO stands for “search engine optimization”. It is the way that you get search engines to recognize your website and rate it high on the list of searches that people conduct every day. Have you ever conducted a search on the Internet? If you have, it has been through some sort of search engine: Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask.com, and others. What you are looking for is good results to the word or phrase that you entered in the search box.

Most people don’t look beyond the first page of search results. On occasion, I will look at the second page or the third but most of the time I stick with the top results on the first page. That is where you want to be — on the first page. If your optimization is good, you will be easily found by others.

The use of keywords and phrases that are easily recognized by search engines increases your visibility. For that reason, titles should be short, and use words that a person would typically enter as their search parameters. For instance, if you have a content article on your site about pancakes, that word should appear enough in that article such that it will appear near the top of the search findings. The more a keyword is used in an article, the more likely that a search engine will find it.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a useful tool for small businesses and large companies. More traffic to your website could result in higher sales. But, with more and more people using search engine optimization, the competition is steep for the top spots on the search results list.

It is wise to edit your content before using it on your site. Cut out any unnecessary words or phrases. Keep the articles as simple as you can.

Choose a focus for your website content that will single you out from the crowd using SEO. This goes not only for the article content, but also for videos, e-books, courses, and special reports that you offer. There are programs on the Internet that teach all about search engine optimization and its benefits to increasing business traffic.

If you represent a niche market, take advantage of the fact. Use keywords that pertain to that area in your articles and throughout your website. When the time comes for someone to find you, they will enter keywords that are favorable to that niche and voila - you will be there.

We have all used them. The name of one search engine is now even used as a verb to refer to the process of using a search engine to obtain information. Search engines are the best tool for finding information on the Internet and organizing it in some sort of workable fashion.

The real question here is how do these search engines work? With millions and millions of web pages in existence, how do search engines return a concise list of results to you so quickly? Places like Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves, and MSN have made tons of money offering their services. Is it a toss-up or is there a strategy?

Well, the science and technology behind computer software and how it works would take a technical genius to figure out. Suffice it to say, the search engine program is set up to “crawl” through all of those web pages and find what you are looking for. If you’ve ever looked at what comes up in the subject line once you enter your request, you will see that all of your words are separated by plus signs. Each word is looked for in website names, posts, and article titles.

The words or phrases that you enter into the search box are called “keywords”. These keywords are used to fuel the search that the program makes through all of that data. That is why search engine optimization has become so popular. Articles that contain a high percentage of the most popular keywords will rank higher on the list of search results.

Search engine optimization does not just extend to the content on your site. Everything on your site needs to be optimized to ensure that it will find a way into search results. Many website owners check their rankings to see how they are doing from week to week. If you use your website for business, how easy you are to find is a big deal.

Once a web page has been viewed by a search engine, it is indexed. This means that the information found there is stored in a massive file to be accessed later if search parameters warrant it. Each page is not crawled for every search or the system would be really slow. Indexing previously viewed pages speeds up the process of the search.

Pages are ranked when the search engine finds all of the pages that fit the search parameters. There is a complex mathematical algorithm that governs this process. The better your content is optimized using easily recognizable keywords, the higher your page will be ranked. Check your pages. The computer spiders and bots that go through these web pages will not choose to pursue complex website addresses, links that require an ID, websites that block such conduct and pages that require too many clicks to reach them.

The particulars are complicated, but the basics of what a search engine does are easy to understand. If you want a search engine to find you, keep the wording simple and use popular terms.

Making Your Direct Sales Website Search Engine Friendly

It’s time to “surf the web”. What do you do? You go to a search engine and type a target phrase into the search box. Within seconds you receive a list of websites. You begin to click on websites that interest you. Before long, you’ve found what you’re looking for. If you’re wise, you’ll make your direct sales website search engine friendly in the same way, so that you can be found when someone begins their search.

How do you make your website search engine friendly? Following are some hints to make your website easier to find.

1. Submit your direct sales website
to the largest directories and search engines. Concentrate on the Yahoo! and Open Project Directory directories. Google and AOL would be good choices for search engines to target.

2. Submit just the main page of your website
, not each individual page. The other pages will be found by following the links from the main page. Creating a “site map” might help the search engines find all of your links, but there’s no guarantee.

3. Choose keywords that are as specific as possible
. If your direct sales companies sells educational toys, you’ll do better by using “educational toys” than you would using “toys and games” as your keywords.

4. The more websites you have linking to yours
, the better your site will rank on the search engines. To get links back to your website, consider a “link exchange” campaign. Find other websites in your same niche and ask them if they would exchange links with you. If they do, both websites should benefit.

5. Your title page tag
is the first thing a search engine displays, so you’ll want yours to be good. Take your time and come up with something that will explain your website.

6. Search engines, while important, are not the only way to drive traffic to your website. Consider adding a signature line to your outgoing email that includes your business email address. Write articles and submit them to various free article sites; make sure to include a bio box with your URL at the bottom. Find and post at related forums, posting your link in your signature line, if it is allowed.

7. Don’t forget about offline marketing.
Have pens, business cards, and flyers printed with your direct sales business email and website. Bumper stickers might be another good bet, as well as magnets.

Creating a website isn’t that hard to do. Take some time, think things through, make a plan, and then follow it. If you have problems, you can always ask at different forums for ways to improve your search engine results. People are generally willing to help make your direct sales website search engine friendly.
