Selling a Domain for net profits

Some people have made a business of domain investing. They deal in the buying and selling of domain names. If you know what you are doing, it can become a business that will make you money. The big part of the process is in knowing when to sell a domain. The same principles that they use to make decisions for their business can be used by you when selling your domain. Here are some tips to make selling easier and more profitable.

Join forums. There are forums out there that are dedicated to discussing everything about domains. This includes buying, selling, what extensions are popular, what domain names are selling, and tips on choosing domain names.

You can find out some useful information in these forums. Being a part of such a forum establishes you as a member and people get to know you. When the time comes for you to search for a buyer for your domain, others will know that you are not just a newcomer to the forum looking for buyers.

Look to sell your domain when it is going to expire. Unless you want to be responsible for the upcoming fees, prepare the way to sell at least a couple of months before expiration. Starting early will give you a chance to gauge the market and see if you even have a chance of getting a good return on your investment.

The truth is that most domains will get you a couple of hundred dollars in profit. Some names do sell for a whole lot more money but that is not the norm. However, you don’t have to follow the norm if you learn the ins and outs of the domain business. If you have come up with your own domain name and didn’t buy it from someone else, then you know the work that has gone into it. Its uniqueness will add to the price. The market is not as big as it was when everyone was jumping on the dot.com bandwagon, but businesses are still looking for good names to use and yours could be that name.

If you are looking to invest in domain names, then choose quality names to buy so that they will bring in a good price when you sell them. Beware of scam artists when it is time to sell domain names. There are people whose sole job is to separate you from your hard-earned money. They may promise you that they can get a certain price for your domain. Remember what they say about an offer that is too good to be true.

Selling your domain can be done at any time. Selling for the maximum profit is a matter of timing and know-how. Learn from people who know about domains so that you possess the knowledge you need.

How To Create Your Own Domain Name

Many direct sales companies, in fact most of them, have a website and a domain name they assign to new sales representatives. Usually the domain name looks like this –
www.directsalessite.com./yournamehere.

While this is fine, it isn’t optimal for sales. A great way to drive traffic to your website is to purchase your own domain name and redirect it to the company appointed website. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1. Choose your domain name.
A domain can end in a variety of extensions including .com, .net, .biz, .us, .ca. Some extensions cost more than others, though it shouldn’t cost more than $15 a year to register a domain name. When choosing your domain consider keywords people will use to find your products. For example if you’re selling Tupperware then the domain name – TupperwareByJanet

Some things to keep in mind when choosing a domain name.

Try to keep the name short and sweet. The longer the name the more difficult it is to remember and the more likely it’ll be misspelled.

Keywords are important. People looking for Tupperware are going to search for “Tupperware” on Google. If the word is in your domain name you have a better chance of showing up on the search engine results.

.com is the most commonly recognized domain extension followed by .net. If you can get a domain name with these extensions it may be easier to drive traffic to your site.
Choose several domain names before you sit down to register one. Your top choice may not be available and it’ll be helpful if you have a selection.

Step. 2 Find a domain registration service.
There are an abundance of these available and domains com at a wide range of prices. Do a bit of research on the company to make sure they’re a company with a solid reputation as well as reasonable prices.

Step 3. Research and register. Log onto your domain registration service of choice and sit down with your credit card in hand. Why? If you have to go back later, even five minutes later, to pay for your domain name, it could be gone. Try your first domain name and see if it is available. If it is, grab it. If it isn’t move onto your second choice.

Step 4. It’s time to redirect your domain name. Redirecting is simply pointing the servers in the right direction. The result is someone types in your new domain name and they land on your company web page. The redirect process is a little different with each service however rest assured it is generally a straightforward process that basically involves finding the name servers from your company assigned website and adding them to your new domain name. The name servers will look something like this:

• NS 011532
• NS2 011532

Once you’ve entered the redirect information, it generally takes less than 24 hours to show up.

Having your own domain name is a great way to establish yourself as a direct sales representative and drive traffic, and sales to your website.

Direct Selling Benefits from Individual Domain Names

Owning a direct sales company is one of the most well-known avenues for helping to generate extra income for your family’s budget. A major benefit of working with a direct sales company is that, quite often, they provide you with a free website to send prospective team members. While this company website might do the trick in a pinch, if you want to see your sales and your team explode, consider purchasing your own domain name.

Why would owning your own domain name be a good idea? There are actually several reasons. Here are six reasons to consider before deciding to purchase a domain name or not:

1. It’s simple to remember.
As an associate of a direct sales company, “your” webpage will lead prospective clients to the company, using a URL similar to this: http://www.parentcompany.com/yourname. If you purchase your own domain name, your website address would look quite different: http://www.yourdomain.com. It is much easier for a prospective customer or team member to remember the second domain name.

2. It sets you apart.
Choosing your own domain name allows you freedom to add your own personality to your business. You’re not required to maintain the company’s status quo if you have your own name. Your business reflects you and helps you stand out from the crowd.

3. You know how you’re doing. If you have your own domain, you can track the number of visitors to your website, and you know how they’ve found you. You can try different marketing campaigns and see which one is bringing in the most traffic. Having a company website doesn’t allow you this option.

4. Give them something extra.
Having your own domain name, as opposed to a company website, also allows you to offer your clients and team members extras. Do you want to provide content to help your team members? Consider writing articles that will give them tools to grow their business.

5. Multiple emails come in handy. Just imagine, instead of having all your company email coming to one address and having to plod through each and every one, you could have an email address to match each function of your business: one for those requesting further information, one for a newsletter that you’ve started, one for comments/suggestions, and one that’s dedicated to team members only.

6. Who do you want to benefit from all your website traffic?
If you do spend a good deal of time marketing your business and people go to your company’s website, who will be the one to benefit most from it? Your parent company, of course!

Having your own domain name, however, lets you have prospective customers and team members go to your personal website first. If they would like further information, you can link to your company website. By doing this, you will have gotten “first dibs” on the prospect rather than their having to search a large website to find you.

While these six reasons for having your own domain name for your direct sales business aren’t the only ones, they are something to consider before you choose to “just” use the site your company has provided. The reasons for having your own domain name are varied, but ultimately the choice is up to you.

There are many affordable web hosting packages available today. How do you decide which one is right for you? Even when the price is important, you should never buy your package based on this factor alone. Remember the old adage "You get what you pay for".

If you know what to look for when shopping for a cheap web hosting package, getting the right one for your needs is easy. Just make sure to check out the following:

1. Disk space and bandwidth limits

Some packages offer very limited amount of disk space and low traffic volume. The hosting company will charge you extra for additional disk space and bandwidth. Even if your website is small at the moment, you will need some extra space to allow for its future growth.

2. Included domain name

Unless you already have one, you will need a domain name for your website. The domain name can cost you between $6 and $30 a year depending on the registrar. If you decide to use private registration to hide your personal data in the domain names registry you will have to pay around $20 a year on top of the regular registration fee.

3. Included email accounts and mailbox size

Most web hosting companies offer email as a part of their packages. If you need to have email in yours, decide how many addresses you will need. Make sure that the package you are getting provides enough email addresses and adequate mailbox capacity.

4. FTP access

You will need to upload different files to your website. Check whether you will have an FTP access to your server - some companies will only provide a web browser-based file upload tool. It's always better to have more than one way of transferring files to your server.

5. Dynamic scripts support

If you will have anything other than simple HTML pages on your website, you will need you web server to support dynamic scripts such as PHP, CGI or Perl.

6. Technical support

You need to have access to tech support whenever you require it. A good hosting company will provide you with 24/7 phone and email support even for the smallest packages.

7. How to close your account

If you are not satisfied with your package, you should be able to close your account within reasonable period of time - at least 30 days - and get full refund. Make sure your web host provides this option.

Now you know how to select the hosting package that won't disappoint you.

How to Buy Web Space and Domain Names

Does the length of your website's domain name registration affect search engine optimization and results?
Should you renew your domain name for a long period of time? And if so, how long is long enough? If you want to stay ahead of your competition, then you might consider looking at the length of time your competitors have registered their domain names.

If your competitors have generally renewed their domain names for one or two years, you might consider registering your domain name for 5 or 10 years. While putting off your domain name's expiration date might help your search engine rankings, keep in mind that this may be only a small victory when it comes to search engine rankings.

Its good business sense to register a domain for at least 10 years. You don’t want to deal with the process annual process of renewing them every year. It’s best to obtain the domain names that you want to keep for a while and renew then on a 5 to 10 year plan.

If your domain name expires, there's a good chance that someone will register your domain name immediately after it expires. If, for whatever reason, you don't renew your domain name, someone watching a 'watch list' of expiring domain names will try to capitalize on the online business that you've built over the years. They know that there is potential website traffic they can have simply by renewing your old domain name. By renewing your domain name for several years, your domain name won't expire for a while, and it won't be opened up to expired domain name buyers.

If you really want to stay ahead of the competition, you might consider registering or renewing your domain name for 100 years. Currently, Network Solutions (www.netsol.com) is the only registrar offering the 100 year option, which costs $999.00. GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com), currently offers to renew or register a domain name for 10 years, at a discount of $6.95 per year.
Yes, you can lose critical positioning in the search engines if you don’t reregister your domain name in time. You may have to start the SEO process all over again!
